Boskone report

Better late than never….

The good:

  • Panels like Short SF (with James Patrick Kelley and others) and Intellectual Property (with Cory Doctorow, Patrick Nielsen Hayden and Beth Meacham)
  • Cory and John Scalzi and others (Scalzi’s got a list here) hanging out and talking in the dealer’s room
  • A Tor party where there was actually room to breathe and move around, and where I ended up in a corner conversation circle that at various times included matociquala, truepenny, arcaedia, autopope, Ken MacLeod, pnh, John M. Ford, and others
  • Excellent food at Cafe Jaffa and Tapeo
  • Seeing the friends and acquaintances that I pretty much only get to see at cons

The bad:

  • Most of the other panels I attended
  • A subpar dealer’s room that resulted in me buying just one book, despite going in with a list of things I wanted. I still can’t believe that there were no copies of wicked_wish‘s Four and Twenty Blackbirds to be found
  • Hotel guests who think it’s a good idea to lock their small yippy dog in the room and then head out for the evening
  • A shorter single malt list at the hotel bar, and their then being out of Lagavulin on top of that
  • A Boskone with no suricattus. That’s just wrong.

The rest:

  • Next year’s Boskone is going to be in a hotel that’s not even open yet, and isn’t in the Back Bay area of the city or conveniently attached to a large mall. That, combined with a list of guests that’s not yet looking very impressive (especially compared to this year), may mean I’m passing on Boskone next year.
  • It may have been cold, but the lack of blizzards was a definite plus.

    1. They’re changing hotels *again*? Oy.

This time I gather it’s because the Sheraton already had something booked in for 2007 by the time NESFA asked about it. I don’t know if that means they’ll be back at the Sheraton for 2008 or not.

  1. Is that new hotel out by HarborLights (or whatever the hell Pavilion it’s called these days)? If so, yeesh. Talk about the boonies.

Not that one has time to actually leave the hotel during a con anyway … 🙂

    1. Yep, it apparently is, though it’s on the south side of 90. And not actually next to the water, despite being called The Westin Boston Waterfront.

And I tend to pretty much always leave the hotel during cons to get food, or go to a Vienna Teng concert, or something. 🙂

  2. I missed it because I had two homework assignments and a set of tests to grade for Monday. 🙁

I like JPK. He was super-nice and encouraging to me when I was in his writing workshop in high school. Of course, now I’m an engineer. Thanks anyway, man!

    1. Yuck. Sorry your weekend ended up being so busy.

Mr. Kelley does seem to be really nice, in addition to being a darned good writer. Though I don’t know how much of a favor he’s doing people by encouraging them to write! Congratulations on resisting his not-so-evil will.
