Another reason that the continuing gentrification of Manhattan sucks

Priced Out: Live music venues in the Village wobble on their last legs

Why would people agree to pay astronomical rents to live in the new
apartment buildings and high-rises that are popping up all over the
East Village and the Lower East Side? One big selling point is the
neighborhood’s world-class live music clubs–except those same new
buildings and high rents are driving the clubs into extinction. Luna
Lounge and Fez have both announced that they’re shutting down, at
least for the moment, and the future of Tonic and CBGB is in doubt.

Guess we’ll have to see where the NYC live music scene moves now. Brooklyn, perhaps?

        1. I still need to get from 42nd and Park over to 33rd and 6th to get to the PATH, which is more of a pain (IMO) than just getting on the 4/5 at GC and taking it to Brooklyn.

          1. For us it’s a change at WTC and get on a Brooklyn train at Cortlandt vs. change at Pavonia/Newport to get to Hoboken. Technically we could walk to Pavonia/Newport, but Grove is much closer.

The bigger difference is that in Hoboken everything seems to be on Washington, which puts it a lot closer to the PATH than things in Brooklyn seem to be to the subways.

  1. That is major suckage, indeed.

The NYC music scene has been moving to Brooklyn (specifically Williamsburg) for the past 2-3 years … this is just going to seal the deal completely. Until Brooklyn starts getting pricey, and everyone starts moving to … where? Staten Island? *sigh*

Get ready for a lot of trips to mars in the future.
