Having spent a few years in New York State's North Country for college, I became quite fond of an entree that, to date, I have discovered is only available at Sergi's Italian restaurant in Canton (or at the nearby St. Lawrence Northstar Pub): pizza rolls. Pizza dough wrapped around a filling of sauce and cheese, sometimes with pepperoni, and then deep fried. The restaurant itself may be unprepossessing, but the pizza rolls are still a treat that wakens my tastebuds in a unique and very tasty way. No calzone or "flat" pizza compares, and I'm glad to get the chance to stop there while en route to Ambercon North.
Posted by Jennifer at September 24, 2003 4:47 PMIt really is true that they don't actually bear much resemblance to a calzone, despite the fact that both are pouches (of sorts) with pizza fillings in them. Part of the difference is probably the lack of ricotta in the pizza rolls, and the other part is the deep frying. In any case, pizza rolls are definitely yummy, and I find it almost bizarre that they haven't spread at all outside of the Canton, NY area.
There is a sergi's in Potsdam, NY too. Pizza Rolls are great. There are other places to go in Potsdam and Canton. Josies has pizza rolls. They bake them. They are good too. There is a play near by in Norwood, NY that has very good pizza too. Its called Rico's. They also have the best wings I've every tasted in my entire life. I've tried them in several different states too, but nothing compares. The economy in upstate NY sucks, but the food is outstanding!
Posted by: Chris at September 16, 2004 2:38 AMI miss my pizza rolls... I went to Clarkson University for two years and I got pizza rolls often. Now I'm going to school in Albany, NY... no pizza rolls here. Going to be taking a trip up to visit friends, and to get a pizza roll ^_^
Posted by: Jaime at September 11, 2006 12:25 PMI'm up in Canton for the first time visiting my wife's ALma Mater and will finally have the pleasure of tasting the infamous pizza roll, I can't wait! Neither can she, it has been 6 years.
Posted by: brandon at October 9, 2006 9:31 PMI was eating Sergi's pizza rolls back in 1982, they have been a late night staple in Potsdam for years
Posted by: Walt at March 22, 2007 8:00 AMI grew up in Hermon/Russell area I have enjoyed Sergi's Pizza rolls for a long time (since 1974). I now live in New Hampshire, and only make it up north once or twice a year. (I introduced them to my wife and step-son), So every time we make a trip to Upstate NY we stop in at Sergi's in Canton, (the one and only Sergi's as far as I'm concerned) Momma Sergi was always cordial to us Kids, even though we were rather boisterous at times. The Other Pizza places don't come close to the flavor and comfort Sergi's Pizza Roll have. The cross between Carnival fried dough and a simple pepperoni pizza (I hear they now have a cheese only Roll that I imagine is just as good)I prefer the Original Pepperoni. They used to make them ahead of time and keep them warm on top of the pizza oven so that people wouldn't have to wait.
One note. When eating a pizza roll one must remember to hold the roll in the UPRIGHT position and eat from the top down. After a 25 year gap in my pizza roll eating I'd forgotten this, and as a result was the unwitting recipient of one cup of steaming hot grease down the front of my shirt. But I didn't care, I still LOVE them mmmm, hot grease, melty cheese, deep fried fat and starch, slobber.
Posted by: Owen at April 12, 2008 10:19 AMI graduated from Potsdm in 1984. My daughter has interviews at Clarkson and SLU on Monday, so I'm making my first trip back in many, many years. I can't wait to go to Sergi's for a Pizza roll and to order my daughter's first Pizza Roll. I'm seriously considering bringing a cooler up so I can bring a few home for the rest of the family. As far as I'm concerned, the Pizza Rolls are reason enough to go to school in the North Country. I bet they cost more than a buck fifty now!
Posted by: Mary Lou at August 1, 2008 4:47 PMI worked at Sergi's from 1980 to 1983 and made more pizza rolls than I can count. The joy in a pizza roll is its total and unrepentant lack of nutritional value. Hot, spicy, greasy - nothing hits the spot after a night of too many beers like the $1.50 pizza roll. You had to order at least two to have them delivered. Desperate and drunk, students would beg outside the doors at 2:01am for any leftover pizza rolls. The Pizza Roll is truly a Potsdam and (Sergi's ) classic!
