  1. Marcas O Murchu New CD

    FLUTE ALBUM IN OLD STYLE
I agree, I now have my copy! The long awaited second album from renowned flute player Marcas O Murchú, ‘Turas Ceoil’ was released at the Fleadh Cheoil in Letterkenny in August by Ard-Ollamh Antóin Mac Gabhann, a friend for over twenty five years. A master of the Sligo-Leitrim-Roscommon tradition of flute and tin whistle playing, Marcas has played a vital role in the evolution of Irish flute music, especially in the northern part of the country. During the Scoil Eigse, Marcas performed to over 400 people on the Tuesday recital with legendary fiddler Tommy Peoples, Micheal O Raghallaigh, Antain O Farachain and Danny Mahony. He played for a worldwide audience on the Ceili House programme for RTE broadcast Saturday evening. Marcas broadcasts regularly his own music shows in the summer or RTE- RnaG . He has also recently presented musicians from Antrim and Derry on the “Geantraí” series on TG4. He presents music on various flutes crafted out a rich harvest of unfamiliar tunes by totally staying in touch with older players. Waltons’ Guide to Irish Music recently stated Marcas “has won critical acclaim as pure traditional music, technically accomplished without straying from the main melody…in a manner that encourages closer listening”. Treoir magazine has said of him for ‘style and repertoire Marcas has few equals’. Ciaran Curran cittern player of Altan, Sean Og Graham (on guitar- Beoga), Gearóid Mooney (guitar) and Seamus Quinn (piano) provide excellent accompaniment. His niece Nora O Murchu, Téada’s Oisín Mac Diarmada and Ben Lennon play fiddle-flute tracks and Spaniard Jose Climent plays mandolin and pipes. This recording will inspire many aspiring musicians to play the flute and provide pleasure for listeners for many years to come.CICD 163 is available from Cló Iar-Chonnachta http://www.cic.ie.

  2. Marcas is to be honoured by Comhaltas as Ard-Ollamh of Fleadh Cheoil
In Derry. Long overdue recognition of a worthy recipient. Great example of a modest
quiet natured person who just shares what he loves best, Irish culture especially music.
