I’ve got tickets to the Infinity Hall show already, but I don’t think I’m going to make either the Watercolor Cafe or Towne Crier shows. The Highline Ballroom show is a definite possibility, and the Housing Works show a slight one.

Anyone else on my friends list planning on being at these? woj? Meredith? Beuller?

Two Irish trad concerts in NYC

I don’t know if I’ll be making it down to the city for either of these shows, but I thought I’d share for those that might be interested:

September 12: Brian Conway and Brendan Dolan
Bronx native Brian Conway is the leading standard bearer of the celebrated County Sligo fiddle style in North America. Brian was tutored as a boy by Sligo fiddle legend Martin Wynne and was also greatly influenced by the elegant style and impeccable technique of New York fiddle great Andy McGann. Brian himself has, in turn, tutored and inspired many younger New York fiddlers who are actively keeping this local tradition alive. Brian’s discography includes a 1981 duet LP with fellow New York fiddler Tony DeMarco, a 2003 solo CD for Smithsonian Folkways and A Tribute to Andy McGann, a 2007 collaboration with button accordion icon Joe Burke and pianist Felix Dolan. Brian’s latest recording, Consider the Source, was released this year on Galway’s Cló Iar-Chonnachta label. Pianist Brendan Dolan (Felix’s son) and other musical friends will join Brian for this performance.

October 3: Mike and Mary Rafferty with Dónal Clancy
Flute player Mike Rafferty is an ageless marvel still going strong well into his eighth decade. A native of famously musical Ballinakill, County Galway, Mike is the finest living exponent of the old-time east Galway wooden flute style. He has had an enormous influence on many younger Irish-American musicians in the New York area, particularly his daughter Mary, who played the button accordion, flute and tin whistle for many years with the group Cherish the Ladies. Mike and Mary have made three superb duet recordings together, and Mike matched Mary’s solo CD with one of his own, Speed 78, which he recorded at age 78! Guitar accompaniment will be provided by Mary’s husband Dónal Clancy, a son of Liam Clancy of the famed brother act and a member of the Waterford-based group Danú.

Veda Hille in NYC on Sunday!

The amazingly talented Veda Hille [homepage|myspace] will be playing at Joe’s Pub in NYC this coming Sunday.  Veda hasn’t made it to the northeastern U.S. for several years, so if you’re in or near the city, don’t miss this chance to see her play.  She’s a truly one-of-a-kind artist, and if you like to toss around the term “genius” when talking about musicians, she’s definitely someone who deserves the label.

Concerts

Back on Sunday, arcaedia and I went to see Altan at The Iron Horse in Northampton, MA. I posted a brief review of that show here.

Coming up on March 3rd, it’s LĂșnasa performing at The Iron Horse (and meeting up with matociquala and maybe wojsvenwoj and smoemeth).

Then on March 8th, it’s a long drive out to Schenectady, NY to see Susan McKeown play at Proctors Theatre. Making the long drive less onerous is the fact that Susan was kind enough to put us on the guest list for the show, though I’d be going even if she hadn’t!

Throwing Muses & 50 Foot Wave

Last night’s Throwing Muses show at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC was mighty fine, as wojsvenwoj mentions here. Having 50 Foot Wave as the first opener was a very nice bonus, but the main attraction was definitely Throwing Muses. David Narcizo is just an amazing drummer, and having him up there with Kristin and Bernie again was a real treat. I was also quickly reminded of just how many TM songs make me think, “God, this song is fucking great!” Hopefully they will indeed to another round of shows in a couple of years. This one was certainly worth the long trip down to NYC and getting home at quarter of 4 in the morning. My thanks to woj for driving the New Haven to Manhattan part of the trip, and for getting us past the all-too-common I-95 accident on the way home just before they closed the highway entirely.
